HAPPINESS is possible while going through divorce. You can experience true joy and contentment despite your circumstances. I know this sounds a little crazy but if you focus on the great things in your life, you will find people respond in surprising ways.

Everyone knows you’re in the divorce process. Family, friends and acquaintances know or heard about what’s going on in your life. This is not a great feeling. Yet, with whatever knowledge they have about your break-up, if you genuinely communicate that you know you’re going to be ok and are actually enjoying some blessings in your life, you will ease the awkwardness and be a pleasure to be around.

How can you make this happen? Here are a few suggestions. The most simplest of all is to smile. Not a fake, plastic smile but an “eye-crinkling” smile. Appreciate small gestures the people around you make to try to reach out to you. Put others first. Ask them about their lives, and then ask them, with genuine interest, how they are. Listen. Actively listen. Don’t be thinking about your response to what they’re saying. Think about what they’re saying. Lose yourself in their world. Give of your time and emotional energy as others have done for you. Experiment with this. If you do this a few times, I guarantee you will see very positive responses that will tell you that you are on the right track.

Take it a step further and do something nice for someone. Anyone. Pay for the elderly person in line behind you at the food store with just a few inexpensive items. Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. Ask someone out for lunch or coffee or whatever. The point here is that you are not waiting for someone to do something nice for you, you are the one taking action.

These small acts will strengthen you. Little by little. You will feel genuine happiness. Others will notice that in the middle of your pain, you still care about others. You care about them. The positive comments will come. Just wait and see.

Proverbs 15:13 “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit” worthy of praise, think about these things.”
